Former/Other Characters in the RP: Spain (Axis Powers Hetalia), Belarus (Axis Powers Hetalia)
How did you hear about us?: I was in this game for ages ages ago, gosh!!!

Character Information
Name: Antonio Fernández Carriedo (aka Spain)
Canon Origin/Series: Axis Powers Hetalia
Teaching Position and why it suits them: Care of Magical Creatures! Antonio likes taking care of children, and that seems to pretty easily translate to animals as well. He likes the outdoors and the idea of many strange and wonderful things that are still left out in the world to discover (oh, how the unknown fascinates him), not to mention he's good with his hands. Generally, the whole class would interest him and also be something he'd be comfortable teaching. (Not to mention, he used to teach it. I mean.)
Suitability: While he was a known Death Eater, he was cleared of his crimes - and for a valid reason. Most of what he did was while he was under Imperius, and he bears a heavy sense of regret and guilt for anything he had done. Most other jobs haven't taken him primarily because of his and his family's reputation, but he's hoping Hogwarts will still be as accepting as he remembers it.
Gender: Male
Age: 30
Out of school living location: He flitters between Buñol, Spain - where his parents live - and close to Tain, Scotland, where he's trying to find a job in the UK after a lack of luck in Spain.
Blood status: Pureblood.

Personality: Upon meeting him, you will probably notice that Antonio is unfailingly sunny, for a better lack of a word. He may not be as cheerful and fully optimistic as his younger self was, but at his core, he's still the same. Antonio is like the country of his birth - sun, light, passion, and an optimistic mindset that sticks around, even in the worst of things. The war has weighed him down with quite a bit, but he still tries to be cheerful about things as much as he can. (Although, he seems to have horrible luck.) He's also for the most part rather easy to please - sun, warmth, and a good plate of food with some company will make him very content. He's a people person and loves to have friends and family all around him, even if his family and list of friends has dwindled quite a bit after the war. He puts his passion into almost everything he does, even if that tends to make things a little overdone in the end - or at least sometimes makes his magic a bit more potent than he intended. He also loves to romp around in the outdoors, either taking care of plants or just spending his time in it. He's also quite fond of children and their antics, even if you wouldn't want him for a father.

On top of everything, Antonio's thick. Thick as a brick wall and dense as it, too. Not to say that everything hits the wall and doesn't drip through the cracks, though. He takes things primarily at face value, or just doesn't try to filter out the truth in things. He's not stupid, but getting him to notice what's really going on is like trying to put the square block into the round hole - it doesn't really work. He'll usually try to assume the best out of people, although his levels of trust have been skewed a little lately. He can be gullible about things, or at least allow the points to fly over his head so far they'll become constellations. Naturally, not everything goes out over his head, but for the most part he won't notice or care. For the most part, he'll treat you like a good friend and good company as long as he likes you. He'll fiercely protect you if he cares about you, but his interest will wane easily if given the chance.

While Antonio's mostly rather easily pleased, he's also rather easily exasperated and strict when it comes down to it. While he'll easily spoil kids rotten, he'll just as easily discipline them within an inch of their lives if they step out of line enough. He got angered easily at people's antics when he was younger, often snapping at children within his family's care (even if he regretted it later). He was cruel and a huge bully in his youth, but he's since mellowed out and matured a little, even if he's still as airheaded and dense as ever. The stigma of being a known Death Eater and the time spent as one has weighed heavily on him, but he'll still face you with as much of a smile as he can - unless you get on his bad side. It's not the easiest thing to do, but if you are on his bad side, expect a lot of nasty comments and a good kneeing kick to the shins. He's not one to hesitate at using force if he has to. He's also got a bit of a greedy side that he mostly keeps hidden, but it'll show at inopportune moments - namely over things he finds "cute." (Not to mention gold is damn pretty to him.)

tl;dr - He's a happy idiot who can still be a bit of a jerk when it comes down to it.

Canon Background: Spanish history itself has quite a bit of twists and turns to it - and Spain himself seems to have a few at least in the comic. While not a main character, he has a decent amount of appearances in the comic, even if large parts of his history (read: most of his colonies and the history there of) are left out. He's called the most optimistic of the cast, even though he seems to have rather horrible luck at times - or just very poor choice in his friends.

Spain is mostly seen when he's younger, mostly when he was in control of Southern Italy (aka Italia Romano). He loses most of his money trying to keep Southern Italy under his rule, and seems to actually baby him in comparison to his other subordinates. Even so, he had a hell of a time dealing with him, often yelling at the kid and getting very frustrated at his antics. But, he seems to grow to love the kid and has a soft spot for the Italy brothers in particular. He's also shown in control of Belgium and the Netherlands at the same time - Belgium seems to be a sort of sassy big sis to Romano, while the Netherlands doesn't seem to be happy with his situation under Spain's rule at all. (Which, really, is decently historically correct for once.)

He was linked to Austria by marriage in the Hapsburg Union, although it didn't seem to exactly be the best for him - he's seen sulking as France and Austria fight, telling Italy to go have fun while he still can. He was also on the side of Prussia and France in the Austrian War of Succession - mostly due to the fact that France was pretty much in control of his kingdom at the time. He shares a bit of a strange friendship with France, which doesn't always seem to work out in his favour. (He also tends to get molested and duped continuously by him.)

Spain's Invincible Armada and its eventual downfall by the hands of England is briefly touched on - showing him being captured and shut away by a rather malicious England and moping on his bad luck. The two seem to share a large amount of animosity because of this, with Spain still rather angry at England many years later (which makes perfect sense with their politics even now, honestly).

During WWII, Spain is broke (as in no money at all) and rather beaten down after his Civil War, and has to deal with a rather pushy (and pissy, literately) Romano who wants him to join Italy's side of the war. He apparently makes paper flowers to try to get his money back and grumbles about all his lost money and glory. He seems completely out of money until his accepts the Euro much later on, and seems to finally regain his cheerfulness and stamina.

He's also in a good handful of gag strips, although those don't really weigh on his history as a character or a country, really...

TL;DR (AT LEAST IN TERMS OF A HISTORICAL SENSE) - SPAIN ONCE HAD GLORY AND SPLENDOR, BECAME A DICK, AND THEN IT ALL CRASHED DOWN AROUND HIM. And then he finally picked it back up. Kinda. The end.

Background (AU!Canon; HP): pooting Antonio Fernández Carriedo was born to a happy and rather affluent Spanish wizarding family, just outside of the sleepy town of Buñol. His family once held a lot of power - spanning along with the growth of the old Spanish empire to the New World, and across the sea, boasting strength that even Britain's greatest could not hold. Sadly, along with the decline of the Spanish Empire, his family's power and wealth began to fade (especially at the hands of a particular English family that they still hold a bit of a rivalry with). After the Spanish Civil War, his family was forced further into hiding, most moving to England to escape the possible purges of Franco's rule. After Franco's death, many started to move back, including his parents. While his parents were laid back and rather content with their lot, the rest of his family clung fiercely to the old glory of their past - which rubbed off on Antonio at an early age.

The early days of his childhood were spent romping around his hometown, growing tomatoes, and generally being a normal kid. He grew up believing wholeheartedly in the words of his family and that he was to be the next one to bring glory back to their family's name. His cousin - who lived in Portugal - shared the same view at that age, and the two often had fights, one trying to best the other whenever they would meet. Antonio's aunts and uncles believed fiercely in the status of their blood - anyone who was not a pureblood did not deserve to be a wizard, and those that weren't didn't deserve decent treatment. Antonio clung onto this idea, often being a bully to other boys in his neighborhood because of it.

At the age of ten, his parents moved to England, figuring the separation from the rest of the family would do their (highly-impressionable) son some good. Antonio didn't exactly like the change - he was in the land of his family's old rival after all! - but he tried his best to stay happy, like his parents wanted.

Perhaps due to their move, Antonio was accepted into Hogwarts, rather than one of the Spanish schools their family traditionally went to. His parents liked the idea though, and encouraged him as he began his schooling. Unfortunately, Antonio's tendency to be a bully followed him, and he was horrible to half-bloods and muggle-borns - just like his family taught him. Even though he was sunny and spacey, he was cruel to anyone he didn't like.

While at Hogwarts, Antonio grew close to two other boys his age, and also from out of the country. Together, they were a terror, often pulling pranks and causing trouble all over the school together. Even if the other two boys primarily enjoyed bullying for the fun of it, Antonio was usually the most cruel - oftentimes more sadistic in his pranks than the other two. However, in their fourth year, one of the boys was transferred to Durmstrang when his family moved back home. The loss of his good friend being nearby changed Antonio drastically, although it was a rather gradual change. While they kept in touch over letters, it wasn't quite the same without the third part of their trio. The loss of their friend's rambunctiousness seemingly quieted the other two, and their reign of pranks slowly declined over their last three years.

During his second year, his parents decided to move back to Spain, although Antonio stayed in Hogwarts, except during break. It was during this time that his family took in a small gaggle of halfblooded children. His parents were friends with their families, and Antonio was slated as a sort of babysitter for them, much to his displeasure. He still clung onto his status as a pureblood, but with time, the children quickly won over his heart. Even after they moved away, Antonio tried his best to keep in touch with them. Growing up with the children and his time in Hogwarts changed Antonio's views on the status of blood over time, and he quickly revised his stance on it as he matured.

Antonio wasn't a star student, but wasn't horrible either. Despite being a ditz, he surprisingly had fairly high grades, and was able to figure out complex spells faster than most. He did well in most of his classes, although he usually presented a bit too much force behind his magic, sometimes overdoing his spells. (He was that kid setting fire to things on accident.) He enjoyed Care of Magical Creatures - the chance to be outdoors and the cute animals were interesting to him - and Herbology - often trying to grow tomatoes in the greenhouses, much to the annoyance of his teachers.

At the end of their seventh year, Antonio was much different. He was still cheerful and as dense as ever, but his bullying streak was gone and he left Hogwarts a very different man. It didn't take long for him to wander back to the school though, looking for a job and an excuse to be near his old friends and "charges," who were now attending the school. (Of course, that old reputation of his followed him - even though no one would believe the cheerful Professor Fernández could ever be that cruel!)

However, his life changed drastically with the war suddenly exploding all around them. Antonio's family had stuck close to their pureblooded values, inviting the Death Eaters as far as Spain and letting them into their lives. With the fear that his family would be slowly killed off as the war continued - let alone engaging in such horrible practices as killing Muggles and halfbloods - Antonio willingly volunteered to spy on his own family for the Ministry of Magic. He gave up his teaching job and went back to his family, pretending to be on their side. He kept track of his family's movements and plans, even as they grew closer and closer to the Death Eaters.

But, after a year of spying and lying, he grew scared and tired, longing to be back with his friends and the people he loved. With any of his family - including his parents - who did not agree with Voldemort's view of the wizarding world on the run, Antonio was left alone, sick to his stomach with what his family had done. He decided to run away, planning on going into hiding with a couple of his closest friends once he made his way to freedom. But, unfortunately for Antonio, he got caught by the Death Eaters his family had become so cozy with, and found himself placed under Imperius to be used as a puppet.

With his family under Antonio's controlled thumb after the death of his uncle, Antonio was forced to order much of his family to their graves - all in the name of the Dark Lord. But, after being caught with his mask off, Antonio was shuffled around the country, and placed less and less under Imperius. (After all, it was hard to control someone and run away with six Aurors hot on your heels.) Cheerfully assuring the Death Eaters of his loyalty, Antonio managed to slip more and more away from them - or at least finding himself more and more with a clearer head and his own decisions. With the weakening sway of the Death Eaters that had controlled his every movement for years, Antonio managed to shuffle his friends into hiding with the help of another old friend, assuring their safety after being ordered to kill them.

With his friends finally safe as the war grew worse and worse, Antonio caught a lucky break himself - an Auror, who he had taught as a young man in Hogwarts, offered him the chance to go into hiding. In exchange for spilling information about the Death Eaters - much like he had been at the beginning of the war - Antonio managed to run away, securing himself in hiding with those closest to him for the last year of the war.

Naturally, once the war was finally over, Antonio was not the most popular man. His reveal as a Death Eater during the war ruined his reputation, and the actions of most of his family made it even worse. Antonio himself stood trial, and was cleared of his crimes due to his claims of being placed under the Imperius Curse. The Auror who assisted him into hiding put in a good word for him as well, although that's dwindled into nothing but a rumor along with the rest of his history. With most of his family dead, and a good chunk of their old fortune gone, Antonio has been looking around for a job that could accept him - bad name and all. Perhaps old Albus Dumbledore and Hogwarts would still be as accepting as he remembered them being… dragon

man what a nasty dragon

RP Samples: Sample Journal Entry: Oh my! It's been quite a while since I've been here, especially using these journals. I wonder if that old journal of mine is still in the Gryffindor common room… Or is it in my old office? I know I had one when I was a teacher. Was the one I had as a kid different? I think it was different. I think it was! I don't remember. Hmmm. Ah well! I feel like a kid again, being back here in school with everyone again!! How exciting!

It's quite nice to find myself back here though, especially in my old post of your professor of Care of Magical Creatures! The creatures didn't seem to remember me much - minus that one very very very very very old one, what is his name again? I don't remember it, but he didn't seem to be too happy to see me again. I wonder if he still hates tomatoes! What a silly thing to hate. They're so tasty! And red! And delicious!

-But ah! Getting away from myself. It's wonderful to meet all of you! And to re-meet some of you, I'm sure. I don't think I remember very many people, it's been quite a while - plus I never liked England or Scotland much, it's far too cold. Don't want to remember it. Yuck. But. Anyway!! I look forward to being a teacher here again!

Third Person Sample: He was back. Back at Hogwarts, which was a funny thought to him. The old castle, nestled far into Scotland, had always held a mix of emotions for Antonio. But, the nostalgic happiness was all he let sink into him, a warm smile spreading on his face as he gazed around the familiar place. It'd been quite a while since he'd been here in his teaching days, and even longer since his days as a schoolboy. But, Hogwarts was always the same, always strange and changing around him in ways he could still trace over the back of his mind.

Antonio stopped outside his old office, his smile growing into a grin as he peered inside. The walls were bare, the shelves and desk empty for his arrival, waiting for him to fill them up again. "Still the same, aren't you?" he asked the walls, imagining a cheerful welcoming in the echo of his voice. "I wonder if you're happy to have me back, old room!"

He laughed at himself - talking to walls, how silly of him - striding in to place the first few things he'd need in his office. (A book here, a journal there, a quill or two over there- right!) Antonio hummed happily to himself, pushing older and darker thoughts out of his mind, focusing on the warmth spreading from the top of his head down to his toes. It was nice to be back somewhere familiar and safe, at least without all of the usual mess he'd been dealing with lately. Even if he didn't like the weather in the United Kingdom much, especially this far north and this far from his old (and nicely warm) home in Spain, really, couldn't this isle be nicer at some point of the year-

But a sudden loud bell broke him out of his reverie, a confused look settling over his face as he stared at an old - and fairly familiar - clock on the wall. "Ah. Right! I'd left you here," he called out fondly to it, staring at the clock with a smile. He took note of the time, a tickle of something passing through his mind. A tickle of something important. Something very important. What was so important about half past two?

Antonio continued smiling, staring at the clock with a happily confused face, a memory of something else surfacing. Something about this particular clock. "And I'd bewitched you to remind me when I had-"

Wait.

Half past two.

Now he remembered.

As quickly as it had come, the smile and warm feeling vanished as Antonio's expression faded to horror. "-when I had class!"

With a flurry of robes and nearly forgotten books, out he went, down the old and familiar halls to the class he would be very, very late to.

But, honestly, late class and all, it really was good to be back.
